| Homocysteine, Plasma #16462 |
|
| This test is intended for use in screening patients who may be at risk for heart disease and stroke. Homocysteine can be considered to be an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Patients with cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and thromboembolic disease generally have higher homocysteine levels than matched controls. Some other clinical conditions, including hypothyroidism and lupus, can cause elevations in the homocysteine level. Niacin and theophylline can also cause elevation in this value. |
